Book Review: The 5 Love Languages

The HowTo ADHD videos on the Top 5 Relationship Rules recommends this book.

Why don’t we understand one another? This book takes the perspective of a marriage counselor who tries to teach couples how to speak each other’s language. I have heard the audiobook of the first two love languages: affirming words and quality time. I will post a more detailed review after I finish.

The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate. Gary Chapman. 1992.

This is part of the series on books I can pirate by the power of the torrent. After having struggled with reading it, the audio format was more accessible. I uploaded it to my Android and listen to it through Google Play (a little too complicated a process). I will post a fuller review when I read the book.

There is this one quote that really gets me. “Love is always a choice. That is what makes it beautiful.”

So, I heard the book. The first time I really went the audio route. I don’t think my memory works as well this way. Oh well….

So the languages themselves. I’ll forget them, so let’s list them:

  • Receiving gifts
  • Quality time
  • Words of affirmation
  • Acts of service (devotion)
  • Physical service

This is an acclaimed text by a reputed marriage counselor. It provides a direct view of five categories through which love can be expressed. It might even been seen as a tool, if only we could find the language most important to the other, and perhaps to oneself.

Thinking about love is a new adventure for me, it is also a vocabulary. Reading books like these with friends gives us a common language.
